National Novel Writing MonthIt was a dark and stormy night.

It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

… I had a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong Hills.

Well, you have to start somewhere.

So begin your writing career with the UNT Libraries annual  National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo. The national event  challenges aspiring novelists to write 50,000 words of a novel during November.   UNT events include:

  • 6 p.m. Nov. 1 - Kickoff Party, which will include distribution of survival kits for NaNoWriMo
  • 7 p.m.-8 a.m. Nov. 13-14 -  All-Night Write In for NaNoWriMo participants to share ideas with and receive advice from each other
  • 6 p.m. Nov. 30 - Thank God It’s Over Party

All events will be in Willis Library,  Library Forum.

National Novel Writing Month began in 1999 when a San Francisco  writers’ group encouraged its members to write each day in November and create 50,000-word novels  - about 175 pages - before midnight  Nov. 30.

Since then, NaNoWriMo has been observed by libraries, schools, universities and writing groups. Twenty-one members of the writers’ group participated in 1999; in 2010, more than 200,000 people signed up on the NaNoWriMo website.

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

Well, you have to end somewhere, too.
