McCarney era begins with spring football drills

Dan McCarney head football coachHead Coach Dan McCarney and staff will greet Mean Green football players at the first spring practice at 7 p.m. March 23 at Fouts Field.

McCarney, right, joined the Mean Green in November 2010 after a stint as assistant head coach with the University of Florida’s national championship team. He also has been head coach at Iowa State University.

The Mean Green, an NCAA Division I team, is allowed 15 spring practices, including a final intra-squad scrimmage. Practices are open to the public and the media, and are scheduled to avoid conflicts with classes, McCarney said. Fans may watch from the stands at Fouts Field and from designated sideline areas at the Athletics Department practice field.

The Green and White game, which ends spring practice, will be at 1 p.m. April 16 at C.H. Collins Stadium, a Denton ISD facility.

McCarney said he and the coaches were well received by high school and junior college players during the winter recruiting period.

“This class will be special to me and our coaches,” he said during a Feb. 2 media conference to announce his first class of student-athletes. “They took a bit of a chance, because we’ve not done it yet on the field.” But he added that he expects top players, especially from high schools in Texas and Dallas-Fort Worth, to be attracted to the university. He noted that UNT has the nation’s fourth-to-fifth media market, exposure, opportunities, "a world class university, an $80 million stadium … a successful staff and competitive schedule" that will appeal to students.
