The Revisionaries, a documentary created by alumnus graduate Scott Thurman, will air nationally on PBS affiliates on the PBS Independent Lens series. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the film will be shown at 10 p.m. Jan. 29 on KERA-TV.
The Revisionaries, a 2012 release, follows members of the Texas Board of Education as they review science and social studies standards in public schools. Thurman, who received his master of fine arts degree in documentary film from UNT in 2010, received the Special Jury Prize for the film at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. He originally conceived of creating a documentary about the Texas Board of Education for his master’s thesis film.
A native of Lubbock, Thurman also created Smokey, a short documentary about an Elvis Presley impersonator in a small West Texas town, while he was a graduate student. Smokey was screened at both the AFI Dallas International Film Festival and the Los Angeles Film Festival in 2009.
