Dear UNT staff members:
Today, UNT System Chancellor Lee Jackson announced a new policy that will move the system and its member institutions to an at-will status for all staff employees who are not on an employment contract. The new policy will not change the employment status of faculty members.
The system has been exploring a move in this direction for some time, and this policy change brings us in line with other universities in the state, including UT Austin and Texas A&M. I believe the changes and standards outlined in the chancellor’s memo are in keeping with our existing culture and values, and it is clear that fair and effective practices can be developed within the new framework.
The new policy, which is expected to take effect on June 1, 2012, should be published no later than April 2. Once we have the policy and can see the details, UNT will be in a better position to answer your questions. At that time, UNT also will begin developing its own policies and procedures within the system’s new framework, and I plan to engage staff representatives in this development process.
At UNT, we will continue to be linked by a sense of shared values, trust, communication and information sharing. I assure you that staff members will continue to be among our university’s most important and dynamic assets. Without the full engagement and participation of our staff, we cannot attain our goals. I will keep you informed of our next steps.
