Materials scientist lights the way with new generation technology

Nigel Shepherd has been awarded an NSF grant of nearly $300,000 for research about organiz light emitting diode technology. He will be assisted by Jingcheng Du. Both Shepherd and Du are faculty in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Sediment will help researchers predict frequency of tropical storms

Professor Harry Williams has received a $38,992 grant from the National Science Foundation’s Catalyzing New International Collaborations program to study storm patterns in Thailand. He will work with a faculty member at Chulalongkorn University and a UNT graduate student.

Unusual behavior may signal new uses for steel

Engineering professor Srinivasan Srivilliputhur and a University of Wisconsin collaborator discovered a new behavior in steel, which could help industry to develop stronger materials. The findings were recently published in the journal "Nature."

Semiconductor Research Corporation funds microchip fabrication research

Oliver Chyan, professor of chemistry, was awarded a grant of nearly $130,000 from the Semiconductor Research Corporation in cooperation with Intel to create and implement new tools for microchip fabrication.

Super sensitive weather radar station to be installed at Discovery Park

The Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA) radar will be installed at Discovery Park. The system will provide improved severe weather data and storm warnings to the North Texas region. Data also will be available to university researchers.

Smartphone data collection could help highway planning

Yan Huang, associate professor of computer science and engineering, received a grant award for about $164,000 from the Texas Department of Transportation to research use of smartphones in conducting travel surveys.

Grape seed compounds may slow progression of Alzheimer’s disease

Richard Dixon, distinguished research professor, has joined researchers at Mount Sinai Ichan School of Medicine and Purdue University to study a potential Alzheimer's drug. The team's work is funded by a National Institutes of Health grant.

Researchers identify compounds that may help create cardiac drugs

Douglas Root, associate professor of biology, and two Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science students, will present their findings related to treatment of hereditary cardiomyopathy at a national Council on Undergraduate Research event. Only 60 presenters were selected from 800 applicants.
