Sam Atkinson has been named a member of the U.S. Army Crops of Engineers Environmental Advisory Board and Lee Hughes has been named an American Society for Microbiology Distinguished Lecturer.

New bachelor's degree to focus on state's environmental needs

Texas has a strong need for ecologists who can find answers to problems created by growth and new demand on natural resources. The undergraduate degree in Ecology for Environmental Science is the first to be offered in the Dallas-Fort Worth region.

Biochemist Chapman advances cotton plant research

Kent Chapman has received renewed funding from Cotton Incorporated for two on-going cotton plant projects. One project concerns development of low-protein varieties of cotton, and another studies methods to make seedlings more cold-resistant. Both support environmentally sustainable production.

Donor's trust to support biological sciences department

Rancher Maurine Pearson, who died in 2012, made a trust distribution of more than $88,000 to support biological sciences. She developed a friendship with Provost Warren Burggren after she donated emu eggs to be used in research. A conference room will be named in her honor.

New laboratory named Center of Innovation by Waters Corp.

The Metabolomics and Metabolic Signaling Pathway Research Laboratory overseen by Vladimir Shulaev will support students and faculty as they study the chemical make-up of living organisms. The lab is one of 20 in the world selected for the corporation's innovation designation.

Internationally recognized scientist joins research cluster faculty

Richard A. Dixon, a world-renowned specialist in metabolic engineering of plants and a member of the National Academy of Sciences, will join UNT in 2013. Recruitment for prominent research faculty began in 2008, when the cluster model was established.
